Three names dominate at Addington CDI3*/CDIP/J/Y

Britain’s top young riders put up an amazing fight at last weekend’s Addington CDI3* to take a number of top placings, as well as our senior representative scoring a GP second and a win in the freestyle. Reports from the venue were that it was a great atmosphere – almost ‘Olympic’! The organisational team had put in stringent bio-security measures to ensure there was minimal risk from the current EHV outbreak and also worked round the clock to keep the competition running in light of a number of withdrawals.

Three riders dominated the youth divisions with hat-tricks in their respective levels. 2012 team gold medallist Nadine Krause in the Ponies for Germany, Danish rider and reigning European YR Champion Catherine Dufour in the Young Riders and, excitingly, Erin Williams for the home team in the Juniors. Erin also featured in the top three in all the pony classes.
Nadine Krause and the palomino stallion Danilo won all three pony classes but British riders pushed her all the way to ensure the victories were by the smallest of margins. In the opening team test, the top seven combinations certainly split the three judges with no consistency in the overall rankings with the exception of Nadine and Werner Steinheuer’s Danilo with the two British judges, Sandy Phillips and Clive Halsall, having her top with 71.624%. She was also third with her own Cyril WE but nestled nicely in between was Erin and mum Claire’s Dynasty on 70.342%, making it a trio of palominos! It was the same positions in the Individual test, just with improved scores. Nadine topped 76% with her freestyle on Danilo and British rider Phoebe Peters took runners-up spot, having been fourth in the previous two tests, with her exciting freestyle which won lots of praise in Vidauban. Erin capped a brilliant performance with Dynasty for third.

In just their second season together, Erin Williams and Fleurie have certainly laid down the gauntlet for European selection at Junior level with domination at Addington. Three tests, three wins, three +72% scores against some top level European competition with the highlight being a whopping 79.042% in the freestyle, which included an 87% artistic mark from Belgian judge Jacques Van Daele. Erin, who trains with Sonia Webster Baines, has ‘clicked’ with the Florestan-sired Fleurie well and seems to manage riding the 17hh mare with the same panache as her 14.2 Dynasty. Jeanine Neiuwenhuis (NED) and former Pony European Champion Jessica Krieg (GER) were second and third respectively in the Team and Individual Tests but in the Freestyle, home rider Charlotte Fry made her mark on new partner Remming, in second, having taken over the ride of the exciting KWPN gelding on the untimely passing of mum Laura. Another British rider in the top eight ribbons in three tests was Maisie Scruton with her first competition horse, Hot Chocolate 43 showing that we have a number of pony riders making a successful transition to horses.

Reigning European Young Rider Champion Catherine Dufour showed the form which won her the title last year and showed she’s the one to beat once again with domination in the 18 – 21 category but with two horses in the mix. Atterupgaards Cassidy took the team and freestyle tests with Atterupgaards Orthelia winning in the individual. Carl Hester pupil Olivia Oakeley was never far off the pace with third in the team and freestyle tests and fourth in the individual with her own Dimaggio-sired Donna Summer – all with +68% scores.

The senior competition was initially disappointing when a number of senior British riders elected to stay away leaving a sole British representative, Peter Storr with Susan Stringer’s Belmondino plus Dutch duo Seth Boschman and Vai Bruntink. However, the younger contingent was set on making both senior classes a great spectacle with a huge atmosphere and a great deal of audience participation! On Friday evening, top honours went to Seth, riding Twister RVL with 67.553% but Peter was just 0.5% adrift in second – with three of the five judges having him in top spot. Vai was third on 64.897%. The next evening, it was Peter’s turn for the red rosette, putting up a great freestyle on the Beltain-sired gelding for their first grand prix level win. The prize giving was a test of the horse’s temperament with the small, but noisy assembled crowd cheering and breaking into a Mexican Wave!

Peter commented; “It was a great show – everyone came together to make it so! The organising team deserve a medal for the effort they put in and there was such a great spirit throughout. The young riders from all over Europe really got together and while the competition was fierce in the arena, outside the arena, they were great friends.”
