National Ulcer Survey: can you help?

Is your horse one of the estimated 6 in 10 performance horses at risk of gastric ulceration?

One of the UK’s leading specialists in equine ulcers, Richard Hepburn MRCVS, is to carry out the UK’s first large scale survey among performance horses and is inviting owners and trainers to put forward their yard for random selection of horses for gastroscopy.

The survey is part of an ‘Inner Vision’ initiative set to take place during May, which is designed to help improve understanding of one of the most underrated equine conditions.

A number of selected veterinary practices will be taking part and Richard is seeking horses registered with BD, BE or the BSJA to undertake gastroscopy to ascertain the presence and severity of ulceration.

Dr Emma Batson of ‘Inner Vision’ sponsor Merial Animal Health believes the survey is set to play a major role in helping to progress awareness and understanding of equine ulceration.  She said; “The survey will be a significant milestone in the quest to better understand equine ulcers and how to manage and prevent them. It’s a ‘win win’ for horses, owners and riders too!”

All levels of performance are acceptable but the horse must have been in work for 4 weeks prior to the scoping day (in May). The cost for gastroscopy and sedation is usually around £150 to £200 per horse, however for those taking part the cost will be nominal but may vary according to individual requirements and will be at the vet’s discretion.
