Kay Maxted and Privaldi were on good form at the Deauville CDI3* in Normandy, France, 25-27 July 2014.

Kay and Privaldi (pictured), her charming son of Gribaldi, delivered a personal best grand prix of 68.22% in the opening day’s grand prix. The British combination’s score netted an admirable 11th place in the closely fought field of 38. The class was headed by Australia’s Lyndal Oatley and Sandro Boy 9 with 72.68%.

“I am thrilled with him,” said Kay, on her journey back home to the UK. “The competition was high as some nations were using the show as a warm-up for WEG [the World Equestrian Games]. Our marks have been getting better all season and I’m pleased to have achieved a good score in that company, and in front of such high-calibre judges.”

“Also what’s pleasing is that there’s still more to come,” explained Kay, who trains with Sarah Millis. “The piaffe-passage work is now getting more established, and once we can produce what we do at home, especially with the pirouettes, there’ll be further marks to be had.”

Kay and Privaldi went on to compete in the grand prix special to score 65.31% for 14th. “I made mistakes in the changes which cost us a lot but otherwise the work felt good,” said Kay.

Daniel Sherriff and Bayford Hall Dallaglio, his 15-year-old son of Laurentianer, scored 67.26% in the grand prix for 22nd and opting to compete in the freestyle, achieved a solid 70.80% for fifth whilst Lesley Peyton-Gilbert partnered by Timothy Harris’s Garuda K posted a grand prix score of 65.44% for 25th.

The grand prix special was won by the home nation’s Marc Boblet with Noble Dream Concept Sol on 71.54%. The freestyle was headed by Australia’s Kristy Oatley and Ronan 2 with 75.32%.

Britain’s sole representative at small tour was Lucy Fallen and her two rides - Cruise, a 10-year-old Lauries Crusador son and Nurejev, a 19-year-old gelding by Wolfgang. Both horses are owned by Adele Rawlinson. Lucy piloted Cruise to 13th place and Nurejev to 14th in the prix st georges with 64.55% and 64.47% respectively. In the next day’s intermediate I, Nurejev scored 63.50% for 14th and Cruise 63.15% for 16th.

Lucy was competing fresh from a successful trip to Vierzon CDI3* (4 - 6 July). At the popular CDI located in central France, she and Nurejev achieved 67.57% in the intermediate I for fifth, and 70.25% in the freestyle, again for fifth. Lucy also achieved another top ten in Vierzon with Cruise who was awarded 66.05% in the inter I.
