Keysoe Premier League: Der Designer makes his mark

British team rider Michael Eilberg and exciting prospect Der Designer, an eight-year-old son of De Niro, impressed at Keysoe Premier League show at The College EC, Bedfordshire on 25-27 April 2014. Michael and the licensed Hanoverian stallion (pictured) scored 79.10% to take the Advanced Medium 98 in convincing style ahead of runners-up Judy Harvey and Blitz who posted a solid 71.40%.

Worcestershire-based Michael and Der Designer’s competition career has been keenly anticipated and they are meeting all expectations on the path to their small tour debut.

Der Designer was price highlight at the 2011 PSI Auction in Ankum, Germany when he was bought by Moscow-based Russians Elena Knyaginicheva and Georgyi Rtischer, and it wasn’t long before the black talent was paired with Michael. Having watched him pilot Woodlander Farouche to victory at the 2012 World Young Horse Championships in Verden, Michael was offered the ride on Der Designer, and he duly accepted.

Michael also topped the grand prix with long-term partner Marakov, father Ferdi’s 14-year-old Latvian gelding. They scored 73.03% to take the class ahead of second placed Roland Tong with Pompidou on 71.80%.

Spencer Wilton enjoyed a successful show with new ride Alfons, Jayne Lancashire’s Dutch-bred nine-year-old. They won a prix st georges and an inter I with 72.98% and 75.04% respectively. Spencer also won an intermediate I partnered by Zamboucca, his own and Jen Goodman’s 10-year-old Stedinger stallion. They scored 72.41% - a personal best at the level.

Leading British rider Fiona Bigwood also collected a couple of wins before sustaining concussion in a fall from her grand prix horse, Sir Donato, whist schooling at the show. The West Sussex rider won the prix st georges with Cashmir (Serano Gold x Michelangelo) on 76.71% and the intermediate A (medium tour) with Atterupgaards Orthilia, her nine-year-old Gribaldi mare, on 73.14%. Following a four-day stay in hospital, Fiona is now back at home recovering with fiancé Anders Dahl and their children.

In the U21s divisions, both Maisie Scruton and Amy Schiessl won two classes apiece. Maisie (17) and Hot Chocolate 43, the mare she partnered at the 2013 Junior European Championships, won both the junior team and junior individual tests with 68.37% and 72.89% respectively. Amy (18) and Mr Mercury, her Mars-sired skewbald gelding, topped the leader board in both the young rider team (67.56%) and individual (67.10%).

Maisie’s former ride, the pony stallion Rembrandt DDH, and new partner, Clare Hole (12), won the pony team test with 68.46% and India Sheridan (13) won the pony individual with Gabi Lucas’s Topstar, a 14-year-old palomino gelding by Top King.
