BD life member, rider, judge and trainer Mary McFarlane from Blairgowrie, Scotland passed away on Sunday 1 September after a long battle with cancer.

Mary, a Group 2 rider, had competed for her region, was a BD trainer and List 5 Judge. Mary and her life time of dedication to equestrian sport had become a Scottish institution and there would be very few people in Scotland (and beyond) who have not had the privilege of having Mary in their life whether as a trainer, judge or friend.

For several years, Mary served the Scottish Regional Committee firstly as Senior Training Rep and then latterly as BYRDS Rep.

Great friend Scotland RDO Cecilia Gladwyn said; “Gone but definitely will never be forgotten”. Thank you Mary for being a friend, I have so many precious memories of our times together. One memory in particular was the time when I asked you to order a taxi when at the Hand Equestrian Centre and you managed to get us a stretch limo for the same price; always the best for Mary! You have earned your rest and we will all miss you.”

There will be a private cremation service followed by a celebration of Mary’s life at Blairgowrie Parish Church on Thursday 5 September at 11.30 am to which everyone is invited.

Our deepest sympathy goes to Jock, Mary’s husband and to all her other family and friends.

BD BYRDS Director Janet Horswill paid tribute; “Learning of Mary’s passing is such sad news. She will be greatly missed by many, her passion for our sport was evident every time I met with her. Mary had a great depth of knowledge which she passed on willingly, and with a great sense of humour. She was a much valued member of our team. Her sheer drive and determination in the face of a truly horrible disease was truly inspirational.”
