The much anticipated Sheepgate BD Under-25s Championships once again proved a hit as Britain’s young riders united at the Lincolnshire venue for six full days of high class dressage competition (21 – 26 August 2017).
This year was the 17th running of this prestigious dressage festival which, over the years, has proved a hotbed of future talent. Many of our top riders have cut their teeth at this show and it continues to provide valuable championship exposure for riders at all levels as well as providing a social side which is second to none.
This year, the winner of the FEI Pony Championship was Jessie Kirby with Grayswood Orlando, her 16-year-old Welsh part-bred son of Grayswood Magic Buccaneer. On the opening day of competition Jessie (14), who hails from Wallingford in Oxfordshire, won the BDSC FEI Pony Team Test with a super 70.13% going on to take the second day’s FEI Pony class where riders select to ride either the Team or Individual test. Opting for the Individual, Jessie and ‘Ginge’ once again showed the quality that earned them top ten places at Lier CDIP earlier this year, to gain 69.76%.
“My Ginge is such a dude!” said Jessie on her Facebook page. “We have had a fantastic Sheepgate U25 National Championships (which as always was such a great show - thank you to the Payne Family). Ginge was feeling super good and won the FEI Team test and the FEI Individual Test to be crowned FEI Pony Champion. Super proud of him as we even managed a PB score! [It was] So good to catch up with friends and always such a great atmosphere at Sheepgate Equestrian.”
Grayswood Orlando is a former ride of Angus Corrie-Deane (17) who was also at Sheepgate, to contest the Junior and Young Rider divisions. With Walter’s Fable (Walentino x Joli Coeur), a 12-year-old gelding bred by Sue Griffin at her home in Surrey, he took third spot in the Eskadron FEI Junior Team Test before upping the ante in round two of the FEI Junior competition with a 69.34% win for their Individual test. The overall FEI Junior title however went to Clare Hole with Pro-Motion, Lynne Jackson’s 14-year-old son of Pro-Set.
Angus also shone in the FEI Young Rider divisions winning the TopSpec FEI Young Rider Team Test with Tiny Tempur, his 12-year-old German-bred gelding. In the second day’s FEI Young Rider competition in which he selected to ride the Individual test, he had to settle for second behind Charlotte Dicker and Sabatini but had done enough to secure the overall FEI Young Rider title.
The FEI Children on Horses title, for those aged 12 – 14 on horses 14.3hh and above, went to Jemima Jennings (14) from Blandford Forum, Dorset, aboard her 15.1hh Irish mare, Diamond Buttons.
The biggest scorer in the national under-25 championships was Laura Woodcock with her talented seven-year-old, Salvator, a good-looking German bred son of Soliman De Hus. The pair was awarded 71.78% for victory in the Global Herbs Under-25s National Elementary Championship. A delighted Laura took to Facebook to say; “We did it. Under 25s Elementary National Champion. Over 71% to win by over 2%. I love you Sammy! [You] Gave me such a lovely ride. Thanks to the whole team who contributes to making me feel very proud on those final halts.”
This unique and popular championships offered an amazing week of competition and friendship for riders and their families. As well as bingo and a hog roast there were crêpes, Pimms and a fabulous party! All put on by Bruce Grant, Sarah Payne, Alex Jewell and the enthusiastic team at Sheepgate Equestrian, and thank you to the companies who supported through sponsorship and prizes.
