Somerford Park Premier League Preview

Cheshire venue Somerford Park will be celebrating ten years of running their Premier League fixture, with this year’s show spanning four days, 24 -27 May.

For spectators there will be a £5 entry fee per car, free grandstand seating, trade stands and hot and cold refreshments.

Lots of top names appear on the starter lists with classes from BYRDS right up to Grand Prix, as well as national and FEI young horse sections. Here’s our guide to help you though the four action-packed days:

Friday 24 May
First class starts: 8.30 am
Last class starts: 4.00 pm

Interesting to note: Michael Eilberg is in the Advanced Medium with two time young horse world champion mare Woodlander Farouche. This will be the mare’s Premier League debut. Paralympic team gold medallist Sophie Wells (pictured) has two rides; in the PSG with Valerius and Inter II with Pinocchio. Lots of top names including Maria Eilberg, Gareth Hughes, Matt Frost, Peter Storr, Spencer Wilton, Henry Boswell, Paul Friday, Eilidh Grant, Jo Hamilton and Zoe Sleigh plus newcomer to small tour and fresh from double success at Addington Premier League, Maria Griffin with both her rides D-J and Kassio.

Saturday 25 May

Interesting to note: Paralympic team gold medallist Sophie Wells makes her Premier League Grand Prix debut with Pinocchio. Emile Faurie and Olympic gold medal winner Carl Hester have two attempts at victory in the Grand Prix. Emile with Sambuca Romane and Topolino and Carl with Fine Time IV and Merlin Nemorensis. Competing against her trainer Carl Hester in the Grand Prix is Sam Thurman-Baker on Spring Pascal. British prime squad members competing in youth tests: Isobel Berrington, Alicia Patrick, Erin Williams, Chloe Vell, Gaby Lucas, Charlotte Fry, Eilidh Grant, Olivia Towers, Sam Thurman-Baker and Amy Woodhead.

Interesting to note: Emile Faurie, Zoe Sleigh, Maria Eilberg, Peter Storr, Matt Frost, Jo Hamilton, Gareth Hughes, Becky Moody, Paul Friday and Henry Boswell all going in the fiercely competitive PSG. In the Special, amongst others, Olympian Richard Davison with Hiscox Aliano. Two entries for the Grand Prix under 25’s class; Emily Cousins with Solo Bachelorette and Sam Thurman-Baker with Spring Pascal.

Interesting to note: In the Medium, popular rider and BD Magazine cover star, ten year old Maddy Whelan with her Mighty Max II. The first Premier League fixture of 2013 to run BYRDS tests.
