Compiègne CDI3*: Brits bring home the ribbons

Britain’s youth and senior riders made their mark at Compiègne CDI3*, CDIJ, CDIP, CDIY (31 May – 2 Jun 2013).

Carl Hester and Dances with Wolves (pictured), Aram Gregory’s impressive, high-energy son of Donnerschwee, were invincible at big tour. In only the horse’s first season of grand prix, he’s undoubtedly making an impression and developing into an exciting top-flight horse in the hands of his London 2012 team gold-medalist rider.

Carl and ‘Golly’ were unanimous winners of Friday’s grand prix posting 73.53%, ahead of Germany’s Stephan Köberle and Darjeeling 5 in second with 71%. Also strongly placed was GB’s Gareth Hughes riding Jane Brewin’s mare DV Stenkjers Nadonna, breathing down the necks of the leaders in third with 70.59%.

Two days later in Sunday’s grand prix special, Carl and Golly clocked up 75.91% gaining a 6% advantage over second-placed Henri Ruoste (FIN) riding Jojo Z. Nikki Crisp and Pasoa were next best of the Brits in a creditable fifth place with 68.72%.

Unfortunately, Charlotte Dujardin and Uthopia were forced to withdraw from the competition as a result of fly bites on the saddle area of the stallion’s back. “Sadly the vet has advised we do not try and put a saddle on Uti due to enormous fly bites that have become septic - a big disappointment. New plan of action - Uti and Charlotte will go to Rotterdam,” said Carl on his Facebook page.

At small tour, Gareth Hughes and Aramis T were awarded 69.73% to finish third in a closely-fought prix st georges, with Peter Storr and Fabioso fifth on 68.86%.

Once again, the mature performances of our young riders indicated that the future of British dressage is in safe hands. Rising star Phoebe Peters and SL Lucci were outstanding in the pony classes – 76.41% to win the team test, 71.74% for third in the individual and a storming 77.95% victory in the freestyle.

16-year-old Maisie Scruton is also making an impact, in her first year of juniors. She headed the junior team test riding Hot Chocolate 43, her 16-year-old Sandro Hit mare. This new partnership scored 71.62% to take the class ahead of Claire-Louise Averkorn with Condio B, the German combination who took the honours in both the individual and freestyle tests.

Britain’s Chloe Vell and Kaja Di Valentina were on form, rising from eighth in the team and individual tests to fourth in the freestyle, less than two percent behind the winner. Both Maisie and Chloe will be returning to Compiègne in July, as part of the British team for the Junior European Championships.

Pippa Hutton and Duela, Philip Woof’s 11-year-old Dimaggio mare, were placed fourth in the 19-strong line-up for the young rider team test with a solid 68.79%, a position they held in the freestyle with 70.77%. This partnership of two years is showing great promise in young riders, following a successful career in juniors that included an individual final place at the 2011 junior europeans. Pippa and Duela are another combination to be heading back to Compiègne in July following their call up for the Young Rider European Championship team.

World Class Development rider Ryan Todd, 20, rode Julie Todd’s Charlex Eskebjerg, a 12-year-old Danish gelding by Carano to top-ten spots in all three young rider tests.

Arnhem CDI3*: Eilberg earns second place in PSG

British rider Michael Eilberg and Woodlander Rockstar were well-placed at small tour at Arnhem CDI3*, the Netherlands (30 May – 2 Jun 2013).

Michael (pictured) rode Lynne Crowden’s Woodlander Rockstar (Rotspun x Sao Paulo) to score 70.02% for second place in the high-quality prix st georges which was won by the Netherlands’ Hans Peter Minderhoud and nine-year-old stallion Glock’s Ziesto (Lancet x Clavecimbel).

Michael’s sister, Maria, who normally partners Woodlander Rockstar, loaned him the ride on the 11-year-old stallion. “Maria kindly let me borrow him as my own small tour horse was unfit for the show,” said Michael, “and he needed an outing for fitness so we took him along. He did a fantastic job for me - I’m really pleased with him. I have competed him before, but not for a couple of years, so it shows what a stable, solid horse he is to perform with a different rider.”

Michael and Rockstar went on to gain third place in the inter I kür with 72.52%, riding a floor plan choreographed to a compilation of Dire Straits tracks. They were a hair’s breadth behind second placed Dutchman Geert Jan Raateland and the Jazz gelding Zorro (72.75%) in the class which was headed by Minderhoud and Glock’s Ziesto on a score of 79.65%.

Lynne Crowden, Woodlander Rockstar’s owner, was at the show in full support. “It was great for Lynne to let me ride him and that she had the confidence in me,” said Michael.

Michael also rode his father Ferdi’s 13-year-old Latvian gelding Marakov in the big tour. The established partnership scored an uncharacteristically low 62.21% in the grand prix which they turned round for a 69.55% ninth place in the following day’s freestyle.

“There was lively hospitality and we were competing in the evenings so there was a lot of noise to deal with, and we had a bad warm-up for the grand prix as there were carriages preparing for a half-time demo,” explained Michael. “Marakov found this a challenge to deal with so became spooky – once he gets the heebie-jeebies, he’ll spook at anything.”

Michael however wasn’t perturbed for the next day’s freestyle. Drawn first to go, they rode to their ‘Transformers’ music compiled by Tom Hunt. “I was feeling confident as Marakov is quite good at comebacks and I know him so well. He’d had more time to settle and did a really good test – it was back up to standard,” said Michael.

Also flying the flag for GB was Amy Stovold with her new grand prix ride Debonnet, Laura Swain’s 10-year-old Don Schufro gelding. The pair scored 64.25% in the grand prix and 70.77% for eighth place in the freestyle. Amy and Debonnet, who made their grand prix debut at Keysoe Premier League show at the end of April scoring 71%+, look to have a bright future ahead of them.

The big tour classes were dominated by the host nation’s Edward Gal riding the 11-year-old KWPN stallion Voice (De Niro x Rohdiamant). They posted 75.72% in the grand prix and 81.22% for their kür.

The British Dressage Convention supported by the National Saddle Centre

British Dressage is delighted to announce that Dutch European Dressage Champion and 2012 Olympian, Adelinde Cornelissen, will be the guest speaker for this year’s British Dressage Convention, Saturday 23 November and Sunday 24 November 2013 at Hartpury College, Gloucestershire.

Adelinde is currently listed number one in the FEI World Individual Dressage rankings with Parzival.

This year the pair (pictured) finished second in the final of the Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage on a world class score of 86.500%, following three wins during the series that led up to the finale in Gothenburg.

In total the pair have notched up four gold medals, a silver and a bronze at European Championship level.

A former English teacher, in 2008 Adelinde gave up her career to concentrate on competing and that year was selected as the Dutch reserve rider at the Beijing Olympics with her most famous ride to date, the Dutch bred Jazz gelding Parzival.

In 2011/2012 the partnership won back to back FEI World Cup finals and were ranked no.1 in the world going into the London 2012 Olympics. They came home with a team bronze and an individual silver.

Famous for her belief in the importance of physical and mental fitness for riders, as well as diet, Adelinde appeared at the 2012 Global Dressage Forum to demonstrate her diverse personal fitness programme which is known to include gymnastics, handball and boxing.

She is also an advocate of the efficacy of mental strength and training, attributing much of her success to the improvement in her mental conditioning, “What you can achieve mentally is incredible. What you think and how you think influences a lot.”

A great communicator as well as being renowned for her charismatic and exciting partnership with Parzival, Adelinde is sure to engage and inspire the audience for this year’s convention.

Entries open for 2013 BEF Futurity

$

0

Entries opened at 10am on 1 June for the Baileys Horse Feeds/BEF Futurity Evaluation series of 2013.

The BEF Futurity aims to identify British bred young potential sport horses and ponies destined for careers in dressage, eventing, show-jumping or endurance, and may even find the Olympic Champions of the future.

Horses and ponies are entered for the discipline they are bred to perform in, with age groups for foals, yearlings, two and three year olds. Each horse is evaluated in hand and loose in an indoor school as well as undergoing a vet’s assessment.

Entries fill up fast for the Futurity, so to reduce the chance of being wait listed, breeders are advised to enter as soon as possible.

All entries are completed on a user friendly online system which can be found at www.britishbreeding.org.  All results are published on the fully searchable Futurity website.

The Futurity Equine Bridge is a new initiative for 2013 and will run as an extension of the Futurity evaluations. The Futurity Equine Bridge seeks to provide top Futurity graduates with the direction and support they will need as 4 and 5 year olds so that they are in a strong position to gain selection for the equine pathway at 6 years old. In order to be eligible for the Futurity Equine Bridge it is compulsory that all horses are evaluated at the Futurity as a 3 year old.

Futurity scores are used by many breeders as a credible marketing tool for their young horses, adding value to a young horse whilst it is still too young to have achieved a performance record. Many young horses are now advertised for sale as having a “BEF Premium” and many people have purchased these young horses because they believe that an independent assessment run by a National Federation has value.

For more information, visit the BEF website or www.britishbreeding.org.

Pavo Cup pre-selection UK

KWPN dressage horses are very successful around the world. The Olympic champion Valegro, the Olympic silver medallist and 2012 World Cup winner Parzival, and the Olympic team gold medallist Uthopia are three of the many outstanding KWPN horses. Their achievements speak for themselves.

The KWPN has achieved worldwide success through its policies of strict selection and identifying talent at an early age. The Pavo Cup is one of several tools for identifying talent. The annual competition for four- and five-year-olds has proven to be successful in producing champions. Given the huge success of the first Pavo Cup pre-selections at the 2012 Hartpury Festival of Dressage, pre-selections will be held at the event this year too. On Wednesday, July 3rd, the KWPN and the organizers of the Hartpury CDI will work together again so that four- and five-year-old dressage horses in the UK can have the opportunity to get selected for the semi-finals, held at the KWPN Horsedays at the new KWPN-centre in Ermelo, the Netherlands from August 12-17.

The Pavo Cup is a competition for talented four- and five-year-old dressage horses in which they are evaluated in groups of two as they perform various dressage movements in front of an experienced panel of judges. Four-year-olds are required to show the walk, trot, and canter in both directions as well as a few strides of medium trot, medium canter, and leg yield. Five-year-olds must show the basic gaits plus extended trot, extended canter, and shoulder-in. Horses are judged on their basic gaits, carriage & elasticity, overall impression, and functionality & correctness of conformation.

The Pavo Cup pre-selection will take place at the CDI*** on Wednesday, July 3rd, at Hartpury College. The competition, like in the Netherlands, is open to four- and five-year-old dressage horses which meet the registration requirements outlined in the competition rules. Only horses registered with the KWPN or KWPN-NA or those which were registered as foals with the NRPS, as described in the competition rules, are eligible to qualify for the semi-finals held at the KWPN Horse Days event in Ermelo.

For more information and competition rules, please visit www.kwpn.org or e-mail ukwpn@kwpn.nl.

Wellington Premier League 6 - 9 June

Lesley Peyton-Gilbert and her 12 year old ride, the stallion Woodcroft Garuda K, dominated at small tour level over four days of Premier League competition, Wellington Riding, 6 – 9 June.

The Northamptonshire based senior international rider took first place in both the Prix St Georges and the PSG Freestyle classes with scores of 70.66% and 75.38% respectively.

Fellow winners at small tour level included Lucy Straker, Gareth Hughes and Willow Kemp.

Gareth Hughes took the top spot in the Inter I riding Judy Firmston-Williams’ Aramis T on a score of 71.67%. The pair competed together at small tour internationally just under two weeks ago during Compiegne CDI3* and produced a solid test, posting third place in the PSG.

Gareth has had the ride only a year, taking over from Anna Ross-Davies around November 2012, and has spent time building up a solid relationship with the sometimes strong minded 11 year old chestnut mare.

He said; “This has been my first year competing her, so we’ve really spent the last 12 months building up our partnership. She’s a real quality athlete with lots of presence and potential but she’s still fairly green so we’re taking it slowly and growing her confidence. She’s a really strong character and so it’s all about getting her to fight your corner – everything has to be done in a certain way, and if you do it like that everything is fine!

“I would say that this has been her best test so far, the plan now is to continue at small tour this year and then consolidate the work over the winter with a view to big tour next year.”

At big tour level Alice Oppenheimer and Jacky Stolper took the only two titles available – Alice in the Grand Prix with her 10 year old Dimaggio gelding Headmore Delegate and Jacky in the Inter II with her 11 year old Diamond Hit gelding, Der Schufro.

Lara Griffith, 24 year old stable jockey for Laura Tomlinson, won in the Advanced Medium riding Dr Bechtolsheimer’s 17hh Oldenburger gelding Kristjan. She also took second place in Sunday’s PSG riding another of ‘Dr B’s’ horses, the 11 year old gelding Rubin Al Asad (stable name Rufus).

Speaking about the show, Lara (picutred) said “We had a great time. This was only the second time out at Advanced Medium for Kristjan and I, and the changes can still be a bit hit and miss. But he’s extremely trainable and his lateral work is spot on, it was probably the highlight of our test. The plan with him is for me to take him up to Grand Prix in the fullness of time.”

“Rufus is a mix between Goofy the dog and a Ferrari! He’s so loveable but he can be really hot and is still quite competition green. Sometimes he can go into his own world but he really stayed with me in this test and it actually started to feel like we were pros. I was so pleased. We had a couple of mistakes but we posted a lot of nines – I think he’s a really promising prospect.”

The opportunity to work for one of the most respected families in dressage has obviously had a huge impact on Lara, originally from Oxfordshire, and she certainly seems to emulate the humble and down to earth attitude synonymous with the Bechtolsheimers.

“Working for Laura and Dr B is hard to describe in words, it’s pretty amazing. Every day I remind myself of how fortunate I am to have this opportunity. They are both so kind and generous – to people and horses. Dr B is usually around and when he is, he helps both Laura and I out with our training every day.

“They’ve given me so many opportunites, and I appreciate the trust that they’ve put in me.”

Apart from Kristjan and ‘Rufus’, Lara will this year also compete Laura’s old Grand Prix ride Andretti H – an 18 year old Hanoverian gelding who won the National Championship title two years running in 2010 and 2011.

In the international youth tests, Phoebe Peters took two of the three classes; the Junior Team Test with her new 16hh ride Delfiano (owned by Laetitia Van De Wyck), and the Pony Team Test with her mother Tracy’s SL Lucci. Fellow winners in the youth tests included Jessica Gale and Sarah Thomas.

In the young horse classes, winners were; Alice Oppenheimer, Daisy Coakley, Michael Bates, Sam Rahmatalla, Paul Hayler, Tom Goode, Hannah Biggs and Sadie Smith.

Carson crosses the channel for first international

Derbyshire based list 1 judge and group 1.2 rider Sue Carson has crossed the channel to compete in the big tour classes at Biarritz CDI2*, France, 14 -16 June.

She will ride her 14 year old bay gelding SCS Beaujolais Primeur in the pair’s first ever international outing.

Sue has owned and ridden “Beau” just over a year – they made their impressive debut at Grand Prix back in April 2012 where they came second in the freestyle at The College EC after only being together a few weeks.

Since then, the pair have competed at nine Inter IIs and eight Grands Prix and are currently on top form having posted  first place in the Grand Prix during their last competition at Beaver Hall in March 2013.

Sue said “We’ve been quietly plugging away and the win at Beaver Hall has set us up nicely for our first international. The biggest thing has been planning and organising the trip – there’s a lot of logistics!

“Beau is my only Grand Prix ride at the moment and I think he’ll make a really solid international horse. This trip will also be a great opportunity for me to gain more experience as a rider.”

Young Rider squad change

Eilidh Grant has made the tough decision to withdraw her ride Comanche Crumble from the British team for next week’s Young Rider European Dressage Championships in Compiegne, France (10 – 14 July). This brings reserve combination Amy Woodhead and Pardon into the squad to join Olivia Oakeley (Donna Summer), Pippa Hutton (Duela) and Samantha Thurman-Baker (Douglas IV).

Eilidh reports that her ride ‘Crumble’, owned by her mum Lorraine, isn’t quite 100%. Lorraine explained; “Crumble has been suffering from what we think is a pollen allergy. She’s really well in herself and on great form but we felt it wasn’t worth risking the long journey from Aberdeen to France only to find that she might be unable to compete. Eilidh and Crumble have qualified for the Summer Regional Championships at Prix St Georges and Inter I so we’ll focus on that now and hope to qualify for the Nationals in September. It was a hard decision but we want the team to do their best.”

Amy Woodhead, from Grimsby, North Humberside, will make her young rider team debut in Compiegne with her own 16 year old bay stallion Pardon, by the sire Jonggors Weyden. She has represented her country before as a Pony rider in 2008 as did her younger sister Holly in 2009 plus her father Ian is a prolific dressage trainer having been the British pony team trainer for a number of years. Ian now largely focuses on eventing but Amy, who celebrates her 21st birthday today, has made dressage her discipline of choice.

Selector Islay Auty commented; “The Grant family have made a brave decision and their sacrifice for the benefit of the team is amazing; I can’t applaud them enough. They have put the chances of the team ahead of their own benefit but having come into last year’s team as reserves, they know what this means. We know that Amy and Pardon will rise to the challenge of this late call up and the team will be as strong as ever.”

The squad of four meet in Dover on Sunday before crossing the Channel on Monday to make the short trip to Compiegne some 40km north east of Paris for the opening ceremony on Tuesday 9 July. The competition gets underway at the 10-hectare ‘Stade Equestre du Grand Parc’ with the Team test on Wednesday, continuing Thursday when the team medals will be decided. It’s then down to individual honours with two days of the individual test to qualify for a coveted freestyle place when the individual European Champion will be crowned on Sunday. Follow the action on the event website or British Dressage will be on Facebook and Twitter with updates.

UPDATE: regional qualification

As you are aware Sunday just gone was the end of the summer qualification period. The team in the office are working extremely  hard to upload the remaining results for the end of June so that we can generate the last of the regional qualification letters.

As of Tuesday 02 July, over 2000 qualification letters have been sent out and results have entered up to and including the 15 June. A third print run was done last night and letters for those who have completed their qualification to this date have gone in the post first class today. We are continuing to add the remaining results and hope to have all the qualifications letters out in the due course.

To assist members, the close of entries for the first two regional Championships have been extended, so Somerford Park and Sparsholt entries will now close at 12 noon on Monday 15th July. This should allow plenty of time for members to receive their qualification pack and make their entry. It is important that you do not send your entry to your chosen regional unless you have received your pack with official entry form.

We do appreciate that you are anxious to receive your letter but we ask that you please be patient. In order to help us to maximise result imputing, please note the above information if you are calling the office to enquire where your letter is. For every phone call received to enquire if a letter has been sent this is precious time not spent uploading results. We do hope you understand.

We would like to thank members for their patience and understanding during this busy time.

Five riders from Great Britain are in France representing their country at Vierzon CDI3*, 5 – 7 July.

Judy Harvey (Fitzcerraldo) and Kay Maxted (Privaldi) will compete at Big Tour which begins on Saturday with the Grand Prix and concludes on Sunday with both GP Special and Freestyle classes.

Judy (pictured with Fitzcerraldo right) last competed the 15 year old gelding, owned by Richard Heley, at  Pompadour CDI3* just over a week ago where the combination posted two top three placings at Big Tour.

Kay and her own 15.3hh gelding were also out together with Judy and Fitzcerraldo at Pompadour, where they finished fourth in the Grand Prix and third in the Grand Prix Freestyle.

In the Small Tour, List 2A judge Harry Payne will ride Sir Real (picured below), the 14 year old KWPN gelding that he co owns with Isobel Laurence.

Harry has been competing Sir Real consistently at Small Tour since 2011, and has been hitting the top ten frequently for the past year.

He will be accompanied by 22 year old Lucy Fallen and her ride, the 18 year old KWPN Nurejev. She has travelled to Vierzon with the horse's owner Adele Rawlinson.

This will be Lucy and Nurejev’s eighth international outing together since she took over the ride from her trainer Gareth Hughes back in 2010. Together the combination have represented Great Britain at Young Rider level, including in the bronze medal winning team at Hagen Future Champions Nations Cup, and have had several wins at Small Tour level over the past couple of years.

The PSG kicks off today (Friday) at 13.00 (BST) with 18 combinations representing six different countires; GBR, FRA, NED, POR, BEL and DEN.

Lucy will compete at 15.17 (BST), followed by Harry at 15.44 (BST).

The Inter I takes place on Saturday with the top 15 placed combinations going through for the Inter I Freestyle on Sunday.

Based in France, 17 year old Amy Bird will contest in the Young Horse class with her six year old gelding Cambel B. The pair have not been placed outside of the top ten in all of their competitions so far this year.

British Dressage has today announced their selected squad of five riders, to contest the upcoming ecco FEI Para-Equestrian Dressage European Championships in Herning, Denmark (21-25 August), which includes three multi-medallists from the 2012 London Paralympic Games.

The selected team comprises:

• Sophie Christiansen (Grade Ia) riding her own Janeiro 6
• Anne Dunham (Grade Ia) riding the Lady Joseph Trust’s LJT Lucas Normark
• Ricky Balshaw (Grade Ib) riding the Lady Joseph Trust’s LJT Engaards Solitaire
• Natasha Baker (Grade II) riding Mr & Mrs P Baker and Mr C Landolt’s Cabral
• Sophie Wells (Grade IV) riding her own Valerius (pictured)

World Class Performance Manager for Para-Equestrian Dressage, David Hunter, commented; “The riders selected for this year’s European Championships are once again a very strong combination, covering experience and newcomers. Selection is never a straightforward process and I’m very grateful to the Selectors. My congratulations go to those going to Denmark and commiserations to those staying behind. On a personal note, I’m thoroughly looking forward to the Europeans and it will be an honour to lead such a strong bunch of riders and critical support staff. It will be a huge positive being a combined championships alongside able bodied dressage and showjumping.”

Will Connell, Equestrian Performance Director commented; “It’s fantastic that we have members of last year’s successful British team representing Great Britain again, this time on the European stage, and it’s great to see Ricky and Anne back on the squad. The funding we receive from the Lottery and Exchequer through UK Sport greatly aids our preparation for major Championships; Herning is a case in point as it is a long journey and the funding will mean we can put everything possible in place to ensure the horses and athletes arrive in peak condition.”

Commenting on their selection;

Sophie Christiansen:“After last year it’s such an honour to be on the team again representing Great Britain. I think we have a really strong team again this year, and it’s great to have Anne back on the team, so in Grade Ia we can really push each other. It’ll feel a lot like it did at the World Equestrian Games in 2010, being alongside dressage and jumping and will be great to be able to cheer them on. I’m just really looking forward to it!”

Anne Dunham:“It’s fantastic; I’m absolutely over the moon. It’ll be the first Championships that Lucas has competed at for GB, he really deserves it and it’s great that he’ll be competing on home soil [Danish born]. I’m really pleased that the Championships are fully integrated, I think it will make it a really great event and I’m looking forward to it enormously.”

Ricky Balshaw:“To be honest, it’s just fantastic news! It’s been a tough few years for me but to find a new horse and be selected within seven months together is amazing. I obviously can’t thank the Lady Joseph Trust enough for finding the horse and I have to say, he’s the best I’ve ever sat on. I also have to say thanks to my support crew and loyal sponsors who’ve stuck by me. Now it’s down to me to make them all proud in the coming weeks.”

Natasha Baker:“I’m really pleased, JP was a star at both Hartpury and Hickstead, and I’m really pleased with how he’s going. He had a fantastic Hickstead and he’s just getting better and better, with our warm-up at Hartpury probably being our best ever. I think it’s fantastic that the Championships are combined this year, there’s still so much excitement from last year’s Games and I hope people will enjoy this year’s competition”.

Sophie Wells:“He [Reece] feels really ready for the Europeans, I’m so pleased;he feels like he’s come into his own. I think that the Inter I at Hickstead really gave us the opportunity to push him at that level and I’m excited for both of us. I think it’s great that the dressage Europeans are on at the same time out in Herning and am really excited to be able to gain as much experience as possible and soak it all up!”

All five riders are on the World Class Programme, which is generously supported by Lottery and Exchequer funding via UK Sport. The Programme incorporates both the Development and Performance Programmes and the Equine Pathway, and works closely with the three British Equestrian Federation Olympic Member Bodies, British Dressage, British Eventing and British Showjumping.

All selected riders will contest the individual and freestyle medal events in their respective grades. In addition the four riders to compete in the team will be named on event. The best three scores from the team and individual tests combined will count towards the team total. As with dressage, the horses and riders complete a set of movements in an arena, either 40x20m or 60x20m - depending on the grade. Each rider is classified within a specific grade, depending on the severity of their disability, Ia being the most severely disabled.

The British para-equestrian dressage team are the current holders of the European, World and Paralympic team title.

Gabrielle Lucas has withdrawn from the British Junior team for this week’s European Championship in Compiegne, France. Her horse, Laurentius II, has a minor veterinary condition which could render it susceptible to further injury with such a short time until the start of the competition (trot up is today, first competition Wednesday). This brings reserve Hampshire’s Georgia Davis (17) with her own Richmans Manta into the team.

Selector Islay Auty commented; “It’s a tough call at such a late stage but Gabrielle has accepted the circumstances with much courage and grace knowing that it was in her horse’s best interests and for the rest of the team. Georgia and her support team have had a rushed 24 hours but are very ready for the challenge ahead.”

Georgia Davis with her own Richmans Manta
Charlotte Fry with Leslie Connor’s Remming
Maisie Scruton with her own Hot Chocolate 43

The Dutch rider’s chestnut KWPN gelding was successfully treated for cardiac arrhythmia but has been out of action for the last few weeks.

Reem Acra FEI World Cup™ Dressage champions 2013 Helen Langehanenberg (GER) and Damon Hill NRW are in third place with 2,802 points.

British Dressage has today announced their selection for the upcoming ecco FEI Dressage European Championships* in Herning, Denmark (21-25 August), which includes all three combinations from the London 2012 Olympic gold medal winning team, alongside Michael Eilberg who makes his senior Championship team debut.

The selected team comprises:
• Charlotte Dujardin riding Carl Hester and Roly Luard’s Valegro
• Michael Eilberg riding Jon and Julie Deverill’s Half Moon Delphi (pictured)
• Carl Hester riding his own and Sasha Stewart’s Uthopia
• Laura Tomlinson (nee Bechtolsheimer) riding her own and Dr Wilfried and Ursula Bechtolsheimer’s Mistral Hojris

Gareth Hughes and DV Stenkjers Nadonna (owned by Jane Brewin) is nominated as a direct reserve for Michael Eilberg and Laura Tomlinson. The selectors have also nominated Uthopia as a reserve for Charlotte, and Fine Time 13 (owned by Jenny Green) and Dances with Wolves (owned by Aram Gregory) as reserves for Carl. If required, the selectors will meet to decide the alternative rides.

The following combinations have also been entered at the Nominated Entries stage: Hannah Biggs (Weltzin); Nikki Crisp (Pasoa); Michael Eilberg (Marakov) and Daniel Watson (Fideramber).

Will Connell, Equestrian Performance Director commented; “Mouth watering! What else can I say about the prospect of the Dressage Team competition in Herning? This will be the Great Campaigner’s (Mistral Hojris) last Championship and I know that the Team are going to be focused on giving the British public another opportunity to shout and cheer for the dancing ponies. It is not going to be easy, Germany are on the ascendancy, Denmark will have Home Advantage and Sweden and the Netherlands also have some serious firepower. As always we are indebted to the owners that support the British riders. The Lottery funding will ensure that Team GBR can provide all the support the riders and horses need in Herning; let battle commence!”

Commenting on their selection;

Charlotte Dujardin: “I’m delighted to be selected to go to Denmark. It will be amazing to have Carl, Laura and I back together again and it’s exciting to have a new member in Michael. It’s been a rollercoaster year but it will be great to have a focus now and I can’t wait to compete. I’d like to say a special thanks to UK Sport, my sponsors, owners and the support team at home which make it all possible.”

Michael Eilberg: “I’m really chuffed to be selected for my first senior Championship team appearance. Ever since we got (Half Moon) Delphi it was always our feeling that she was a team horse so it’s great that the results and competitions have got us there. I’m excited about being part of this team; we’re all friends so it will be great to be a part of it together. It was Julie’s (Deverill) birthday on Tuesday when I called her to give her the news – the best present she’s ever had!”

Carl Hester: “After last year’s success at the Olympics, I hope that we can uphold our standard and bring home gold once again and I feel lucky to have three qualified horses available.”

Laura Tomlinson: “It’s always an honour to be selected to ride for your country and I’m excited the ‘dream team’ will be back together to do what we did last year and keep up our unbeaten record. I’m looking forward to competing alongside the other Team GBR riders for showjumping and para-dressage; it’s what I love about the Worlds and Olympics – being able to watch and support each other. All three teams will be under similar pressure so it will be great to share the load!”

All four riders are on the World Class Programme, which is generously supported by Lottery and Exchequer funding via UK Sport. The Programme incorporates both the Development and Performance Programmes and the Equine Pathway, and works closely with the three British Equestrian Federation Olympic Member Bodies, British Dressage, British Eventing and British Showjumping.

All riders contest the Grand Prix, with the best three scores counting towards the team result (21-22 August). The top 30 placed individuals from the Grand Prix, then contest the Grand Prix Special (24 August); the 15 best placed individuals from this round, but only three riders from any one nation, then go on to compete in the Grand Prix Freestyle (25 August). Unlike at the Olympic Games, riders compete for two individual medals – in the Grand Prix Special and Grand Prix Freestyle.

Hartpury Premier League: Spencer shines bright

High quality Premier League classes ran alongside the CDI3* CPEDI3* at the Hartpury Festival of Dressage, 3 – 7 July 2013.

Spencer Wilton continued his run of Premier League success with a double victory at small tour. Riding Goodmans Supernova, Jen Goodman’s athletic 10-year-old gelding son of De Niro, he took Sunday’s prix st georges qualifier. The quality horse lived up to his name and was awarded 73.60% for a comfortable plus 2% lead in the high-class field.

The top of the podium must feel a familiar place for Tetbury-based Wilton and this show was no exception. True to current form, he also headed the leaderboard in the Thursday’s intermediate I riding Jen Goodman’s Zamboucca (pictured), a nine-year-old KWPN breeding stallion by Stedinger. They scored 72.2%, once again for plus 2% lead.

All eyes were on Michael Eilberg and the record-breaking mare Woodlander Farouche (Fürst Heinrich x Dimaggio). Having graduated from young horse championships which she dominated with unprecedented scores, there’s great excitement around the phenomenal horse. The double world young horse champion is creating quite a stir out of the young horse ranks, and at Hartpury, she did not disappoint with an 83.16% victory in Wednesday’s advanced medium 98.

Michael’s sister Maria also enjoyed a successful show. With Lynne Crowden’s Woodlander Rockstar she won Sunday’s intermediate II on 67.68% and she also posted the second highest score of the premier league classes with new ride Royal Concert, a talented 10-year-old owned by Hermione Black and BD marketing director Penny Pollard. Maria and the attractive grey Oldenburg, who looks from the same mould as his father, Royal Diamond, impressed for 76.48% and a winning margin of 6%.

The advanced medium 85 was a family affair. Oxfordshire-based Dane, Ulrik Molgaard, came out on top. With new ride Godthaabs Faustino, a 10-year-old gelding by Florestan, Ulrik scored 74.12% to edge ahead of his wife Henriette Andersen and Flavio, her eight-year-old gelding son of Florencio (73.82%).

The four-year-old class was won by the elegant young stallion Birdsong III, ridden by Sadie Smith and owned by Anni Mcdonald-Hall. The good looking horse is certainly bred in the purple, being by Carl Hester’s London 2012 team gold-medal partner Uthopia and out of Donner Rhapsody, Anni’s Donnerhall-sired international grand prix ride. Birdsong (pictured right) was awarded a score 8.8.

The five-year-old section was won by another Donnerhall descendent, Satin Rouge, ridden by Worcestershire-based Zoe Sleigh. The chestnut daughter of Sir Donnerhall, who is owned by Christine Sleigh, was awarded 7.74.

The six-year-old title went to Sports Horse Centre Carilla ridden by Louise Davison. The graceful grey mare, who is by the renowned Dutch stallion Flemmingh, took the class by a narrow margin ahead of runner-up Carinsio ridden by Becky Moody. Petplan Area Festival qualification emails

We are delighted to announce that over 4000 emails notifying members of their qualification to compete in a Petplan Area Festival are currently being sent out. This first batch will go out over the next 24 hours due to the volume.

This new process is the first transition in to notifying members of qualification electronically as opposed to sending letters via the post. We would therefore urge all members to make sure that they have an up to date email address recorded on our database to that you can be sure to receive your qualification notification in the future.

As members will be aware, a year ago we installed our new back office database in order to increase efficiency in membership services. This has not been without its challenges however we are now beginning to see benefits and we hope this this will be the first step to a more efficient service.

We are aware that not all members have email therefore there we have maintained the option for a member to submit the required number of test sheets together with their entry form to the venue as proof of qualification.

If think you should have had an email please check your that your email address is correct – if logged on, you can update it in the Membership section of the website or call the office. Also, check your junk folders as sometimes, as BD is a company, your email provider may send our mail there.

Between now and the last date for qualification, a weekly release of emails will go out as and when horses become qualified.

Prelim Non-Qualifiers

For combinations using prelim non-qualifying classes as part of or full qualification, you will need to submit your sheets to the venue with your entry as results for these classes are not currently recorded on the database therefore an email cannot be generated.
