British Dressage is delighted to announce that long serving volunteer Geoff Simpson was recently recognised with a prestigious award from the Torch Trophy Trust. Geoff, from Kidderminster, received his award at the Royal Army and Navy Club in London from HRH the Prince of Kent, along with 20 other volunteers honoured for their dedication to sport on 03 March in a ceremony supported by DAKS of London.

Geoff’s citation included:

‘Already known as a ‘legend’ within the dressage community, Geoff has dedicated many years to ensuring the integrity of dressage is upheld and overseen the general running of events all over the UK.’

The awards are unique in acknowledging the importance of volunteers in sport, a role which often goes unnoticed. The Trust exists to encourage, reward and recognise the three million people in the UK who devote their spare time to volunteer in sport, in their local community and provide more opportunities to get people active.

Sir Bobby Charlton, Chairman of the Torch Trophy Trust commented: “It is hugely important to honour the incredible volunteers that make sport happen in our nation. Without their passion and generosity, we would see participation numbers fall. We are delighted to recognise and highlight the fantastic worked achieved by these volunteers, who demonstrate professionalism and desire to continue improving their activity.”

As a charity registered in the UK, the Torch Trophy Trust relies solely on donations from the public. At the heart of the Trust’s ethos is legacy – founded in 1962 and with the 1948 Olympic torch used as its symbol – the awards have recognised volunteers for over 53 years.

North West Regional Development Officer, Lou Jones, was lucky enough to join Geoff in London along with BD Chairman Penny Pollard. Lou said; “It was a lovely day and I was immensely proud to see Geoff up there getting his award for his dedication to our sport. It’s deserved recognition and he’s a true ambassador for dressage. Geoff’s attitude and outlook instantly make him a likeable character which puts competitors at ease; plus he has a wonderful sense of humour which helps! I’m sure everyone who’s met Geoff will be delighted that he’s been recognised by the Torch Trophy Trust.”
