Welsh Regional Championships: Mount Ballan

Cricklands played host to the third of this year’s summer regional championships running over two days at Mount Ballan (31 July – 01 August).

Helen Askey and her eight-year-old Boston HS won the Dressage Deluxe medium restricted. The Houston/Souvenir gelding was bought through Helen’s trainer Tina Daems who imported the Houston/Souvenir gelding as a three-year-old. Earlier this year Helen who works as a secretary for a chartered surveyor finished 2nd on the gelding at the winter regionals.

“It is fab to win a big one like this, particularly as I made a mistake in the extended walk which is a double mark” said a delighted Helen.

The Suregrow Fertiliser advanced medium restricted went to Jenny Rose and Tabriz. Jenny has ridden the 13-year-old for the last two and a half years, buying him 12 months ago. Since last November Jenny has been based in Gloucestershire where she is working for Sandra Biddlecombe.

“I only decided to go to Mount Ballan this morning,” added Jenny. “I entered but wasn’t sure we were really going well enough but in the end gave it a go having persuaded Stef Eardley who is also on the yard to come and give me some moral support.”

Kathy Sievert rode the British bred Samba Song to win the Equilibrium elementary restricted. The Samarant gelding is the first horse Kathy has owned having loaned in the past.

“I bought him as a four-year-old,” said Kathy who moved to the UK from Germany in 2005. “I’d planned on getting something older but a friend persuaded me I’d be better looking for something younger with a bit more quality.”

Kathy fits riding round a full time job working for a company renting generators worldwide.

“I do Europe, the Middle East and Africa,” said Kathy who flew up to Glasgow the day after competing where the company had been supplying the Commonwealth Games.

Kate Cowell dominated the FEI classes, taking the top honours and Stoneleigh places in the Fairfax Saddles prix st georges and Saracen Horse Feeds inter I with Frances Meier’s Rockefeller IV.
