Daniel Watson and Fideramber (pictured earlier this year) held their own amongst many of Europe’s finest at Wiesbaden CDI4*, Germany, 6-9 June 2014.
The British rider set out for the high profile international with the aim of top ten placings, a target comfortably achieved. He and Fideramber, Susie Farnon’s 14-year-old gelding by Fidermark, performed well in Saturday’s grand prix to score 67.88% for sixth place. The class was won by host nation’s Matthias Alexander Rath and Totilas, on the horse’s second competitive outing following a lengthy break from the competition arena. Rath and megastar Totilas, the former ride of Dutchman Edward Gal, scored 82.80%.
“He [Fideramber] is so consistent now, and goes in and knows his job. Susie and I are very happy with him,” said Dan, after his arrival back home. “He’s brilliant and I’m happy we held our own against high-calibre riders such as Isabell Werth and Dorothee Schneider. It was nice to be thrown in at the deep end with these guys.”
Talking about their preparation, Dan said: “I’m lucky that being based in Kent, the travel time is kept down so he comes off the lorry like a lion! I then like to give him two days on the showground before his test, so I’ve time to prepare him.”
The British pair went on to compete under the floodlights in Sunday night’s kür, riding to their Elton John ‘Lion King’ compilation. They scored 70.62% for seventh place in the 14-strong class which was won by Dorothee Schneider and Silvano 71.
As is the norm at this popular show, the arena was lined with an abundance of knowledgeable dressage devotees, and they all eagerly stayed for the half past midnight prize giving! “The atmosphere was electrical and we thoroughly enjoyed it,” said a delighted Dan. “Fideramber’s never competed that late at night before and, working-in under lights, he freaked out at shadows of himself. After 10 minutes though, he got used to it, then went in to do his job.
“Our music was put together by Susie’s son, Tom Farnon, who’s a professional composer and producer of film music,” said Dan. “I’ve used it a lot and every time I seem to change the floor plan and make it more difficult. It’s more complex and technical now.”
Matthias Rath and Totilas went on to score a double with a 83.19% victory in the grand prix special.
