Charlotte Fry celebrated her birthday in fine style at the Northern Winter Regional Championships at Bishop Burton College (9-11 February 2014). On Tuesday, the day of her 18th, the icing on the cake for Charlotte was a win apiece on two of her talented rides.
Riding Leslie Connor’s Remming (pictured), the horse she partnered at the 2013 Junior European Championships, Charlotte scored 77% - the highest score of the four day show – to take the NAF Magic Prix St Georges Freestyle and secure the first of her tickets for the winter championships at Hartpury in April.
Charlotte has formed a formidable partnership with the 16-year-old Dutch-bred son of Flemmingh, who was previously ridden by her late mother, Laura. This became clear last year when they were the highest-placed Brits at the Europeans and were also untouchable across all three junior classes at Roosendaal CDIPJY in the Netherlands.
The on-form young rider then stormed to an emphatic win in the Nupafeed Advanced Medium Freestyle with a plus 76% score, almost five percent ahead of the rest of the field. This time she rode another son of Flemmingh, Z Flemmenco, or ‘Dinky’ as he is known to his friends - a 10-year-old gelding owned by her grandmother Rosemary Shewen.
Charlotte said on her Facebook page: “Remming is the PSG music regional champion with 77%! Dinky is the advanced medium music regional champion with 76.06% and was 2nd in the advanced medium open! Three winter championship qualifications and two Northern regional titles! It was very good 18th birthday.”
In the KBIS Preliminary it was two ponies, both piloted by 13-year-olds, who came to the fore. First place was secured by Harriet Kirby from Cheshire riding Sullivans Angelina, her 11-year-old 13.3hh British mare. They rode for a solid 71.86% to take the class ahead of runners-up Liberty Tyler and Cyden Oosting Amigo, an NWPCS approved pony stallion.
Another notable win went to young Humberside rider Jack Wainwright (17). Jack rode Dark Bacardi, his seven-year-old gelding to score 74.17% for a decisive victory in the Baileys Horse Feeds Novice Restricted Music Freestyle. Jack and the British-bred chestnut by Dark Surprise who have been competing together for less than a year could be ones to watch at Hartpury.
