British Dressage is sad to learn of the sudden passing of DHI Langar at the age of 21.
A true GB pony, first competing internationally at the age of six, attending his first European Championships in Ireland, 2003, winning a team Bronze medal with Natalie Allen. They then went on to compete at the National Championships in 2003 at Medium level.
In 2005, Langar replicated this success with Portia Manning; both at the European Championships in Italy, again winning a Team Bronze, as well as further success at the Nationals.
Accompanied by then 12-year-old Natasha Leak in 2006, he competed at the Pony Europeans in Saumur, France, again part of a successful team coming fourth. Natasha’s sister Olivia briefly continued Langar’s international career.
Isobel Berrington (pictured), started riding Langar in 2012, taking on a great legacy of all his previous successes. “I’m sure all of his riders would agree that the challenges he placed upon us was emotionally draining at times, but essentially he made us all better and successful riders, from Ponies onwards,” says Isobel.
“Langar’s cheeky nature came through not only at home and in the stable, but also in the arena, giving many judges, trainers, parents and riders some fond memories. I’m sure the likes of Ian Woodhead, Tracy Woodhead, Peter Storr and Islay Auty and many more have very entertaining tales!
“However, the boy excelled himself in the end, helping to bring the country its first ever Pony European Team Gold in Malmo in 2015, finally achieving that magical 70% at the Europeans (after being both the oldest and freshest pony there)!”
Langar spent his last two years in semi-retirement, enjoying life with Zara Lewis, teaching yet another youngster the ropes in the BYRDS system. It’s undeniable that he has been a true ambassador for the sport, and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
“I thank him for all the opportunities, memories and learning he brought me, but most importantly for his friendship which I feel honoured to have had,” says Isobel.
