The second Shearwater Young Horse Semi-Final took place earlier this week at Port Royal in Yorkshire (19 July 2017). This concludes the qualification process for the prestigious Shearwater Young Horse Championships at the LeMieux National Championships in September.
The highest scoring horse across all three age categories was the five-year-old, His Highness (pictured at Hartpury). Piloted by Ashley Jenkins (24) he was awarded a super score of 8.8 from judges Andrea Smith and Tracy Woodhead. His Highness is a British-bred gelding sired by Wynton out of a Fabriano mare, owned by Cherry Elvin, Jamie Reynolds and Dan Greenwood.
Speaking to BD, his breeder Cat Austin said; “’Hugo’ was my first homebred and out of my very special foundation mare Fahrenheydt. When I saw her advertised I jumped at the chance to buy her, she is from one of the top dam lines in Germany so I used all my savings to get her. Although I’m a hobby breeder, fitting it in and funding it with my full time job, I still take it very seriously, researching bloodlines, being very critical with my mares and looking for stallions that will complement them rather than what is fashionable that week, that year! I keep my mare herd small but they are all from top dam lines.
“Hugo was a dream foal, you could see when he played in the field that he had all the attributes that could make him a top dressage horse in the future. We graded him with the KWPN that year. He won his foal grading and was the highest scoring dressage foal that year in the UK with the KWPN. We were lucky enough to sell him to Cherry Elvin, Jamie Reynolds and Dan Greenwood. Dan and Jamie also owned his older brother Romanno Stromboli, the 2013 Shearwater Supreme Champion, so they trusted me when I said he was a good foal.
“He is extremely lucky to have Ashley Jenkins riding him, they have definitely been on a journey! Hugo is a sensitive horse but Ash is such a quiet rider and Hugo trusts him completely. It is definitely a team effort, I have been very lucky to find such great owners for Hugo.”
Intergalactic Aimbry (pictured right) ridden by Becky Moody was the winner of the four-year-old division which boasted a large, high class entry. Another British-bred, he was awarded with a fabulous 8.44. Owned by Becky, he is by Rousseau and his dam is by Emma Hindle’s Olympic partner, Lancet.
The six-year-old category went to Saint Julian ridden by Emile Faurie’s stable jockey, Tom Goode, and owned by Ulla Smirnova. He was awarded 8.32. Saint Julian (pictured below) is a son of Sandro Hit and was bred in Germany. Described by Tom as a ‘complete gentleman’, the talented gelding has caught the attention of the selectors and been duly selected for the World Breeding Championships for Young Horses in Ermelo, the Netherlands, next month.
