British Dressage held its very own version in the form of the hugely popular Traditional Gypsy Cob and Native Breeds Championships which took place at Solihull Riding Club last weekend (29 – 30 October 2016).

The Native Breeds Championships sponsored by Allen & Page is a new event on the British Dressage calendar and proved to be successful with a high number of entries. Meanwhile, the Traditional Gypsy Cob Association Championships sponsored by Dengie Horse Feeds and Hot Horse Showers returned for the second year running with the added new feature of a part-bred section. Both Championships aim to showcase the talent and versatility of the many stunning breeds native to Britain in the dressage arena.

Making her mark on the show with the highest score of the weekend was Native Prelim winner Jayne Mackenzie. Jayne (56) from Derbyshire scored an impressive 76.73% in the Prelim 18 (Section 2) with her own 10-year-old grey Connemara gelding Skidrow Joe. The Irish gelding’s win at the Championships follows a run of good form having recently finished eigth in the Prelim class at the Field House Area Festival.

Another successful combination enjoying a taste of Championship success at Solihull was Aberdeenshire rider Nicky Heale with the Welsh Section D Retanach Request. Nicky and her own chestnut gelding took two Championship titles winning both the Elementary 50 (Section 2) with a score of 71.86% and the Pick Your Own class after posting 73.01% in their chosen test Medium 73 - riders contesting the Pick Your Own class choose tests over the three higher levels of Medium, Advanced Medium and PSG. Retanarch Request is no stranger to a big occasion having contested both the LeMieux Summer Nationals and the Winter Championships at Medium level in 2015, with many other Nationals appearances and Regional wins in previous years to his name.

Representing the Under 18s it was a great show for 14-year-old Ellie Roberts and Tyngwndwn Golden Boy (pictured). With her liver chestnut Welsh Section D gelding, Ellie won the Novice Championship (Section 3) with a wonderful score of 72.25%. Ellie and ‘Dubai’ also finished second in Elementary 50 (Section 1) with 66.51% respectively, whilst her score in the Novice was the highest across all three sections.

The highest score of the Part-Bred Championship classes went to another 14-year-old, this time Zoe Florence in the Prelim 18 (Section 1) and the Novice 34 (Section 2). Zoe, from Aberdeenshire, continued the success for both the Under 18s riders and Scottish riders as she scored 72.30% and 70.12% with her own Hirstmund Merlot. The stunning yellow dun gelding bred by Sarah Hird brought the interesting bloodlines of Highland x Thoroughbred to the arena and alongside his young rider proved the talent of a native cross by winning both their classes with astonishing margins of four percent in the Prelim and almost five percent in the Novice.

In the Traditional Gypsy Cob Championship classes Staffordshire rider Leanne Bailey and Miss Moira Johnston’s Fairytale III stood out in the Intro C to win with a fantastic 71.73%, one of only three plus-70% winning scores in the TGCA classes. The eight-year-old black tobiano mare by Vines Magpie proved the clear winner in the Intro and continued her consistency in the Prelim 18 finishing second with a creditable 68.79% to eventual winner Ginny Duncan with the brilliantly named piebald stallion Kimico Kenny Rogers who scored 72.49%.
