A large assembly of Britain’s top combinations travelled overseas last week for the international competition in Le Mans, France (21 – 23 October 2016).

Henriette Andersen with her own and Jennifer Charlesworth’s Jazz gelding Warlocks Charm (pictured) shone in the big tour. After scoring a creditable 67.98% in the Grand Prix Henriette and ‘Ted’ went on to dance their way to a win in the Grand Prix Kür to Music with an impressive 75.3%. The Grand Prix proved a successful class for the Brits as Steph Croxford and Gillian Davison joined Henriette in the top 10, with Gillian and her own Alfranco going on to a top three finish with 70.3% in the Grand Prix Special.

Also performing well at the show were Central riders Nathalie Kayal (33) and Louise Bell (45). In the small tour, Nathalie and her own German bred 11-year-old gelding Homerun shot up the rankings from seventh in the PSG to take a phenomenal second in the Inter I with 69.92%. The combination held their form for fourth in the Inter I Kür and posted a fantastic score of 71.6%. Speaking from her Facebook page Nathalie said, “Amazing time in Le Mans! Best international placings so far!” with ‘Joseph’ who was on “top form”. Louise Bell showed consistency in the Middle Tour achieving two second place results with her own roan gelding Into the Blue whilst Kirsty Mepham also contested and gained two third placings for her efforts.

There was an exciting win in the Children on Horses class for 12-year-old Lily Payne in her first international outing. Lily, from Boston in Lincolnshire, rode Mrs Ann Savage’s black British mare Beckhouse Cancara to a super first place in the Childrens Team test with 71.38% to improve on her Preliminary round placing of third with 69%. Speaking about her experience Lily said, “What a week... It was incredible to represent Great Britain in Le Mans but to win and have the national anthem played was just a dream come true! I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone back at home for your help and support- especially Grandpa. Ann you are an amazing owner and for you to give me this opportunity to ride your mare is just amazing so thank you. Finally I would like to say the biggest thank you to Mum for all the work and training you have helped me with to make this trip possible and also to Alex for making Cara shine each day and for getting us to and from Dover.”

The future for Children on Horses in Britain surely looks bright as Lily marks the first win abroad for a British rider in this category, now being overseen by the Junior and Young Rider selectors with the support of former Chief Selector Islay Auty and former Training Director Jill Day.

Finally, in the ever-competitive Pony class Isobel Lickley made an impressive debut with her parents’ Robert and Nicola’s mare Valido’s Sunshine to take fifth in the team test with 72.35%. In the Individual test, Jessica Kirby and Grayswood Orlando also made an impression riding to a top 10 placing close on Isobel’s heels scoring 69.5% respectively. Three British riders qualified for the Kür with former Team Gold medallist Clare Hole joining Isobel and Jessica with Elizabeth Rawlinson’s Rosewater I Claudius; All three riders gave their best and rode to strong results in tough competition.
