Some of Britain’s brightest young talent headed to Yorkshire for the second of the Shearwater Young Horse semi-finals at Port Royal, East Yorkshire, which was held alongside their Summer Regional Championships.
British-breds ruled the roost at the competition, winning all three sections and qualifying for the LeMieux National Championships in September. Hawtins San Floriana (pictured) claimed the four-year-old class with a fantastic mark of 8.68, the highest gained over both semi-finals. Piloted by Hawtins stud rider Bryony Goodwin, the elastic British-bred San Amour-sired mare has proven consistent in her first year of competition, coping with pressure and atmosphere well as the Port Royal semi-final marked a personal best.
Young Horse judges Paul Hayler and John Robinson were torn on their winner in the five-year-old section, awarding two horses the top spot with a score of 8.06. It was another Hawtins horse, this time ridden by Lesley Peyton-Gilbert, who shared the win: Belissimo M-sired British-bred gelding, Hawtins Barolo. Competing at Novice with Bryony Goodwin in straight classes, Barolo is enjoying some brilliant scores and is definitely looking like a rising star. Allison Croft’s British-bred son of Danone II, Tantoni Dallaglio may have only started his competition career this year but is already proving successful. Ridden by Derbyshire-based Tim Heappey, the dark bay 16.2hh also secured the win and ticket to the Championship Final at Stoneleigh.
Paul Hayler swapped his Young Horse judge hat for his riding hat in the six-year-old section, climbing to the top of the leader board on F J Veyron with s score of 7.62. Owned by Fiona James, the Vivaldi gelding will be returning to Nationals after coming second in the four-year-old section of the Shearwater Young Horse Championship back in 2014. Now competing at Elementary with Paul, they’re enjoying scores of no less than 71% and have qualified for the Childéric Saddles Elementary Gold Summer Regionals.
